Baseball opens home stand against Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. â€â€ÂVanderbilt’s baseball team will open a seven game home stand on Tuesday against in-town foe Lipscomb at 6 p.m. at Hawkins Field.

The Dores will then take on Wright State on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before facing Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference series home opener next weekend.

Vanderbilt is 16-4 overall and 1-2 in league play after dropping two of three to Alabama over the weekend. The Commodores were able to take the third game of the series, snapping a seven game losing streak to the Crimson Tide as well as ending UA’s 18 game home winning streak.

Freshman infielder Anthony Gomez led the Commodores last week in hitting, going 11-for-17 (.647) with a double and four RBI in five games. Sophomore Jack Armstrong picked up the win in the start over Alabama on Sunday, going 6.1 innings and allowing one earned run on eight hits. He made a great defensive play in the sixth that was ranked No. 6 on ESPN’s Plays of the Day.

Junior right-hander Chase Reid (2-1, 1.74 ERA) will get the start on Tuesday, with Wednesday’s starter against Wright State to be determined.

Lipscomb is 6-13 overall and 1-2 in Atlantic Sun play after dropping two of three to Belmont over the weekend at Shelby Park. The Bisons enter Tuesday’s game having lost five of their last six contests.

Freshman outfielder Lee Wilson leads Lipscomb with a .400 batting average, while junior infielder Cory Hale and senior infielder Ryan Wilkins are tied for the team lead in homers with three. As a team LU is hitting .285 with 13 homers and 128 runs scored (6.7 per game)

Lipscomb’s probable starter is junior right-hander Chad Fromm (1-2, 4.24). He will be making his first start of the year after coming out of the bullpen in his previous eight appearances with two saves. As a team, the Bisons have a 7.56 ERA with 141 strikeouts and 109 walks in 166.2 innings of work.

Vanderbilt leads the all-time series 44-10 and has won the last four meetings dating back to the 2007 season.

Wright State enters Wednesday’s contest with a 6-9 record after splitting a pair of contests at Oklahoma State’s tournament over the weekend. The Raiders have played a daunting schedule thus far against with just two home games and road contests against nationally ranked Clemson, Virginia, Kentucky and Oklahoma State. They beat No. 1 Virginia, 2-1, in Charlottesville on March 5.

Senior outfielder Casey McGrew leads WSU with a .353 batting average, while sophomore Tristan Moore is the top power performer with two of the team’s three homers on the year. Wright State has a .294 batting average with 86 runs scored (5.7 per game) in 15 games.

Wright State’s starter on Wednesday is to be determined. They have a team ERA of 5.19 with 106 strikeouts and 51 walks in 128.1 innings.

The teams met for the first time on the baseball diamond last year, with the Commodores coming away with a 12-3 win.
