NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt baseball will continue its nine-game home stand on Wednesday as UT Martin comes to town for a 4 p.m. tilt at Hawkins Field.
The Commodores are 10-1 on the year and have won six straight contests entering play on Wednesday. VU is now ranked in all of the polls, including a high of No. 20 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll.
Vanderbilt will be without the services of junior first baseman/catcher Curt Casali for the next week as he rehabilitates from a hamstring injury suffered against Indiana on Sunday. Casali, the Southeastern Conference’s leading hitter, is batting .486 with three homers and 11 RBI.
Redshirt freshman Will Clinard will make his first collegiate start against the Skyhawks. The right-hander has made four relief appearances on the season with eight strikeouts and one walk in seven scoreless innings of work.
UT Martin is 7-4 on the year after dropping two of three at Indiana State last weekend. Junior second baseman Trey Karlen leads the team with a .325 batting average with four doubles and five RBI. The Skyhawks are hitting .237 as a squad with five homers and 53 runs scored (4.8 per game).
Junior right-hander Dylan Cubbles will take the mound for UTM. He is 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA and has notched eight strikeouts with four walks in 11 innings of work. The team sports a 3.55 ERA with 78 strikeouts and 41 walks in 101.1 innings of action.
Vanderbilt leads the all-time series against UT Martin 5-1 and last played them in 2005 (VU won 12-5). The Skyhawks won the initial meeting 11-9 in 1995 but the Commodores have captured the last five contests.
