NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sophomore midfielder Ally Carey has been named the ALC Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Carey was instrumental in Vanderbilt’s 17-10 win over UMBC on Saturday, totaling three caused turnovers, three ground balls, and four assists in addition to scoring one goal.

“We are very excited to see Ally receive this award,” said Commodore Head Coach Cathy Swezey. “For a midfielder to receive defensive recognition says a lot. After the UMBC game, I was quick to point out how proud we were of her performance in the midfield and on the defensive end. This honor shows just how deserving she was.”

The award is the second Player of the Week honor for Carey, who received Rookie of the Week honors last year.

After coming to Vanderbilt as the No. 1 recruit in the country according to Inside Lacrosse, Carey netted 31 goals and 22 assists during a freshman campaign that saw her be named to the All-ALC Second Team and the womenslacrosse.com All-Rookie Team. Through three games this season, she has recorded three goals and five assists and currently leads all ‘Dores with nine ground balls.

The 14th-ranked Commodores will travel to Palo Alto, California, this weekend to take on No. 15 Stanford on Sunday at 3 pm CT.
