#13/19 Vanderbilt will hit the road for one more time in the regular season when the Commodores head to Gainesville to take on SEC East rival Florida Tuesday night at the O’Connell Center. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. CT, and the game can be seen live on ESPN and ESPN360.com. The radio call can be heard on the Vanderbilt-ISP Radio Network and vucommodores.com, with Joe Fisher and Tim Thompson courtside with all of the action.
The Commodores are coming off of an 89-72 win at Arkansas on Saturday, their first win in Fayetteville since the 1995-96 season and the first since Kevin Stallings became head coach in the 1999-00 campaign. It was also Vanderbilt’s fifth win on the road in SEC play, the most road wins in league play since 1992-93, and their first sweep of the SEC West division since 1992-93. That year, the Commodores went 14-2 in SEC play, claimed the SEC East Division title, and advanced to the Sweet 16.
Vanderbilt had five players score in double figures in the win over the Razorbacks, with the Commodore charge led by sophomore forward Jeffery Taylor, who scored 18 points and had five rebounds. Junior center A.J. Ogilvy scored 14 points and had six rebounds in only 14 minutes of action, freshman John Jenkins and sophomore Brad Tinsley scored 13 points apiece, and junior forward Darshawn McClellan came off of the Commodore bench to score 11 points. Vanderbilt shot 53.3% from the floor for the game, its 12th game this season it has shot better than 50% from the field. The Commodores are 12-0 in those games.
Vanderbilt once again had a stellar day from the free throw line, making 20-of-23 attempts, a clip of 87.0%. The Commodores have made 324 free throws in league play, which is more than every team but Kentucky has attempted in SEC action. Vanderbilt has attempted 433 free throws, which is 55 more than the Wildcats, who have attempted 377.
Senior Jermaine Beal leads a very balanced Commodore offensive attack with 14.6 points per game. Taylor is next at 14.3 points per game, with Ogilvy (13.8) and Jenkins (10.3) also averaging double figures.
Tuesday’s meeting will be the second between the Commodores and Gators this year, with Vanderbilt winning a thriller in Nashville to open SEC play, 95-87, on January 9. Ogilvy scored 24 points to lead VU, while Beal added 22. Both teams shot over 50% from the floor, and Gator guard Kenny Boynton went for 28 points to lead Florida.
Vanderbilt leads the all-time series between the two schools, 62-56, but Florida leads the series in games played in Gainesville, 38-20. The Gators have won the last eight games played in Gainesville at the O’Connell Center.
Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings has a 6-16 all-time record against Florida, and a 1-9 record in games played at the O’Connell Center. The lone win in Gainesville came in the 2000-01 season.
Florida enters the game with a 20-9 overall and a 9-5 record in SEC play. The Gators have won three out of their last four in league play, with wins over Auburn, Ole Miss, and Tennessee, and a loss in their most recent game at Georgia.
Freshman Kenny Boynton leads five Gator players in double figures with 13.8 points per game. Other Florida players averaging double digits include Erving Walker (13.0), Chandler Parsons (12.3), Alex Tyus (11.9), and Vernon Macklin (10.4). Parsons leads the team in rebounding with 7.0 per game.
