NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt’s 24th-ranked women’s tennis team will play its first home dual match of the season this weekend as they host 54th-ranked Brown on Saturday. The match with the Bears (7-2) is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. CT at the Currey Tennis Center, or whenever the Commodore men’s match with Furman is completed.
Vanderbilt, 4-2, is coming off a big road win over 36th-ranked Yale in New Haven, Conn., on Sunday. The `Dores had little trouble with the Bulldogs as they won five of the six singles matches after taking the doubles point en route to the 6-1 win.
Vanderbilt has displayed more depth in the lineup this season and has been more successful in doubles early on. VU is currently led in doubles by the nation’s 30th-ranked tandem of Jackie Wu and Chelsea Preeg. The sophomore duo is 21-4 overall and remains undefeated in dual play.
The `Dores have four players ranked in the latest ITA singles rankings, led by Wu at No. 32. Senior captain Catherine Newman is ranked 52nd while Preeg and Steinbauer are 79th and 84th, respectively.
Brown (7-2) is coming off an impressive 4-3 upset win over William and Wary last Sunday in Providence. After dropping the doubles point to William and Mary, the Bears posted wins at the top three singles positions and than clinched the match when Catherine Stewart registered a straight set win at the No. 5 slot. Brown only two losses of the season have come to fifth-ranked Baylor and 57th-ranked Dartmouth.
Saturday will mark the third Ivy-league team, VU has faced in the last 10 days. The Commodores faced Princeton (L, 4-3) and Yale (W, 6-1) last weekend.
Admission is free to all of VU’s home tennis matches.
