Postgame Quotes

Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin Stallings

Opening Comments:
I was proud of our guys. They kept playing and kept battling. We finally got it over the top and got it to OT. It was a tough, hard-fought game. [Georgia] is a good team and they’re a relatively difficult team for us for some reason. I thought we had guys who made plays. Andre Walker made huge plays. John Jenkins made huge shots. Jermaine Beal made the most of his opportunities. We all made free throws. At this time of year, you’re trying to get them in the left-hand column.

On Vanderbilt’s hangover after the Kentucky game:
Our guys were hung over all week from the Kentucky game. You try to do what you can [as a coach] and recognize it. It came out on Monday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, it looked like we were someplace else. I was not surprised we struggled and not surprised that this was a hard-earned win.

On Jermaine Beal’s play down the stretch:
He likes to win. He does everything he can do to win. He’s been that guy for us all year.

On John Jenkins:
John made big plays and made big shots. John wants the ball, wants to shoot it, and wants to get shots off. You love to have that as a coach. It takes courage. That kid wants the ball. I’m glad we got it to him down the stretch there.

Vanderbilt guard Jermaine Beal

On comeback:
“Andre made a big shot and A.J. had a game tying tip-in, but Georgia helped us out by missing free throws.”

On layup down the stretch:
“Coach called a play for us (Jermaine, Andre, and A.J.) and I was able to drive it in because everyone was making their play.”

On confidence coming into overtime:
“We knew if we could get it to overtime, we could win. The fans were really into it and we were really hyped up and ready to win.”

On coming from loss against Kentucky:
“The coaches were a little nervous about this game, but we’ll take a win when we can at this point in the season. We practice these kinds of situations in practice and we were able to come up big.”

Vanderbilt forward Andre Walker

On 3-pointer:
“I think I can make 3-pointers and I had full confidence, so that’s why I took the shot.”

On final Georgia possession in regulation:
“My heart dropped like four times during that sequence, but thankfully he short-armed the putback and we were able to go to overtime.”

On Georgia’s physicality:
“Georgia is a physical team and I think they have the second best rebounding margin in the league and when you have that, you have second-chance baskets. We had to match their physicality.”

Vanderbilt center A.J. Ogilvy

On game-tying tip-in:
“I was able to get my hand on John’s shot and I saw he was boxed out. It’s rewarding to help the team out and push us to overtime (after missing final shot against Kentucky).”

On overtime:
“We were confident and psyched and knew our best basketball was going to be played.”

Georgia Head Coach Mark Fox

Opening Statement:
“It’s a tough one to go home with. Our players competed hard and so did Vandy’s players. It was a very hard fought game”

On possession at the end of the game:
“I was pleased with what we had but it didn’t work out.”

On Georgia’s overtime effort:
“We came here to win. We didn’t come here to get close. We won the first time. I’m not surprised we hung in there because we thought we were going to win.”

On what makes Georgia a tough match-up for Vanderbilt:
“I think physically we match up and we play similar styles.”

Georgia guard Travis Leslie

On overtime:
“We couldn’t get any calls and they got a lot of calls, and that’s what got us.”

On the second half:
“We got momentum and started taking good shots. Things started going our way.”

On Vanderbilt:
“They have a great team. They’re definitely a little hungrier this year. I wish them the best of luck. They’re a great team and played well tonight.”
