Postgame quotes

Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin Stallings

Opening Comments:
“I think you have to give LSU a lot of credit. They played with a lot of purpose in the tempo of the game. We were missing two of our best zone offense players. [LSU] played hard and they played well. This wasn’t a case of us not being ready to play or this being a letdown. LSU came out at the beginning better able to do what they needed to do. We got the ball to the basket, but missed layups. In the second half, we did a better job of… taking it inside and getting to the foul line. That was the saving grace for us tonight.”

On Vanderbilt’s Lance Goulbourne:
“He obviously had a good game for us and that’s how we need him to play. Lance stepped up and gave us a very good game. With our depth, we have a little margin for error in a situation like this. Our bench was, for the most part, very productive.”

On Andre Walker’s Injury:
“He got hurt at the end of practice yesterday. Steve Tchiengang ran into his shoulder. Andre said that it hurt, but it wasn’t a big deal. At game time, he couldn’t lift his arm up to parallel. He said it’s looser now than it was before the game, but the trainers don’t think it’s anything long-term or serious.”

On flow of the game:
“Our kids got tight. We had guys who were a little more uptight than they should be or normally are. It was an interesting sort of reverse pressure. Nobody is going to be surprised if [LSU] jumps up and beats somebody, but you don’t want to be that team.”

Vanderbilt guard Jermaine Beal

On LSU’s defense:
“I didn’t feel tense. LSU zoned us up all game and it was effective, but we made the shots at the end to win it.”

On being without two key scoring components:
“If we had John and Andre, their zone wouldn’t have been as effective. But we didn’t have them.”

On being down at halftime:
“LSU is a good team and came in with a nice game plan. They’re a good team, and despite our play today we just prevailed. I think LSU gave us their best game, but I think we made too many plays down the stretch. LSU got tired and ran out of gas and we played on.”

On offense:
“Our game plan was to get the ball on the side, but we had an off shooting night. Sometimes the ball just bounces that way and you deal with it.”

On depth of team:
“We just have a deep team, 1-10. Any player, any night can help us with numbers. Lance really stepped up tonight.”

Vanderbilt forward Lance Goulbourne

On playing without John Jenkins and Andre Walker:
“I found out during warm-ups. I figured john wouldn’t be playing, but Andre got hurt in practice yesterday. When someone goes down, someone has to step up. Everyone stepped up and played hard today.”

On LSU’s defense:
“First half, we didn’t come out as well as we wanted to. Their zone got to us. Defensively we did a better job, but we shouldn’t have let down like that.”

On difference between loss at Georgia and win this afternoon:
“I think last week at Georgia, we were tight the whole game. We had a lot of things go wrong in that game and offensively, we couldn’t get the ball in the basket. This game, we really came out in the second half. We both kept fighting but we prevailed in the end.”

On importance of free throws:
“We shot 43 free throws and they shot 16. If our big guys can get to the basket, we have good finishers and attackers. When we get guys in the paint, we can score.”

On coming up big for Vanderbilt:
“Whatever I need to do to help my team win, I’ll do it. I do the best I can when Coach puts me in. if I have to make free throws at the end, I’ll do it. I don’t get nervous in pressure situations.”

LSU Head Coach Trent Johnson

Opening Statement:
“Eleven times in a row is tough. First of all, considering the fact that Vanderbilt didn’t have two of their better players playing, they are a good basketball team. I believe they are a good team to challenge whoever is in position to win our league and I also believe they can go deeper in the tournament. I thought today was our best effort from start to finish all year long. Obviously, they caused some problems for us but the contributions that we got from Dennis Harris and Garret Green were pleasing. Hopefully we can take this experience and move forward.”

On Vanderbilt getting to the foul line:
“I believe they got to the foul line because of their skill level, their length, and their experience. I’ve said this last year, but I think Beal is an underrated point guard. He is strong, makes good decisions, and he is efficient. When you put Taylor, Ogilvy, and Brad together, you have a solid group that has matured together.”

On Tasmin’s second half play:
“It’s just a matter of time before he makes a basket or two before he gets in rhythm. He is our best player and he is a warrior in every since of the word.”

On LSU’s Zone play:
“We are in a situation where our youth, our inexperience, and our lack of strength and athleticism forces us to stay in the zone. For the most part, we always use zone. “

On keeping morale up:
“I have good kids and that’s the tough part about it. They have been down eleven times but they find a way to pick themselves back up and I think that speaks volumes to their character.”

LSU forward Tasmin Mitchell

General thoughts:
“I thought that we played well against a good team today but came up short. We fought hard on the road today.”

On first half:
“We were able to take the lead going into halftime because we played hard and gave an effort that we should have come with since the beginning of the season.”

On LSU’s foul trouble:
“It was tough to lose some of our players to foul trouble especially Storm Warren because he’s a big part of our team. It did affect our rhythm, but we were working hard on defense and picked up fouls trying to be aggressive.”

On play of Vanderbilt’s perimeter players:
Jermaine Beal was big for them today, especially with three-pointers. Jeffery Taylor was also able to help them by picking up points slashing to the basket and getting extra chances for his team with offensive rebounds.”
