#22/24 Vanderbilt will play its second consecutive game at Memorial Gym when the Commodores play host to LSU on Saturday afternoon. Tip off is set for 12:47 p.m. CT, and the game can be seen live on the SEC Network (WUXP-TV in Nashville), ESPN360.com, and ESPN Full Court. The radio call can be heard on the Vanderbilt-ISP Radio Network and vucommodores.com, with Joe Fisher and Tim Thompson courtside with all of the action.
Vanderbilt is coming off of a 90-71 win over #12 Tennessee Tuesday evening at Memorial Gym. The Commodores never trailed in the contest and built leads of 27 points on two separate occasions on the night, while also getting a career-high and team season-high in scoring from sophomore Jeffery Taylor, who tallied 26 points and was a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe. The win marked Vanderbilt’s first season sweep of Tennessee since the 2004-05 season, the largest margin of victory in the series since an 88-63 win in Knoxville in 2005, and VU’s largest margin of victory at Memorial Gym since 1990-91.
The Commodores shot 47.1% from the field and was 37-of-43 from the free throw line, an 86.0% clip. The 37 made free throws and the 43 attempts are both season highs and Stallings-era highs (1999-00). VU also outrebounded Tennessee, 40-31, and moved to 11-0 in games in which the Commodores outrebound their opponent.
Senior guard Jermaine Beal added 20 points, his third 20+-point outing in the last five games, and junior center A.J. Ogilvy tallied 11 points. The senior point guard is averaging 20.4 points per game in his last five games, and has scored 20 or more in three of those five games – 25 at Tennessee, 21 at Georgia, and 20 vs. Tennessee. He has also had only five turnovers in 177 minutes of play in those five games.
Sophomore forward Andre Walker led the team in rebounding with nine boards. Vanderbilt was also without the services of freshman guard John Jenkins, who missed the game because of illness.
Vanderbilt and LSU will meet for the only time this regular season and for the 105th time overall. Vanderbilt leads the all-time series, 56-48, and leads the series, 32-13, in games played in Nashville. This will be Vanderbilt’s fourth meeting with an SEC West opponent – the Commodores are 3-0 so far this season against the west.
Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings has a 7-6 overall record against LSU as a head coach and is 4-1 against the Tigers at Memorial Gym.
Beal leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per contest. Jeffery Taylor is next at 13.9 points per game, with A.J. Ogilvy (13.4) and John Jenkins (10.4) also averaging double figures.
LSU enters Saturday’s game with a 9-15 overall record, 0-10 in SEC competition, after dropping their last contest, an 87-52 decision at Arkansas on Wednesday night.
Tasmin Mitchell averages 17.2 points per game to lead the Tigers. He also leads the team on the glass with 9.8 rebounds per game. Bo Spencer averages 15.0 points per game and Storm Warren adds 12.0 points per contest for LSU.
