NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt swimming and diving team has been named an Academic All-American team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The announcement was made when the CSCAA released its Scholar All-America teams last week.

The Commodores were one of seven teams from the Southeastern Conference to carry a team grade point average of 3.00 or higher during the 2009 fall semester. Vanderbilt has been named a Scholar-Athlete All-American squad by the CSCAA every year since restarting the program in September of 2006. The ‘Dores had posted three straight years of ranking among the top-7 Division I team’s in cumulative GPA before falling out this year.

Under Organ, the VU swim team has garnered two of the last three Vanderbilt Highest Team GPA awards at the annual student athletics banquet.

“It’s nice to see the team acknowledged for their hard work in the classroom,” head coach Jeremy Organ said. “This award is also a testament to our wonderful academic services department and our counselor, Nate Bell who works very hard behind the scenes.”

A total of 341 intercollegiate men’s and women’s swimming teams from all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA were recognized by the CSCAA. VU was one of 112 Division I women’s teams that were honored.
The Commodores will return to the waters in seven days when they travel to Athens, Ga., for the 2010 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships. This year’s conference meet will be held at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on Feb. 17-20.
