NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a two-month layoff the Vanderbilt swimming and diving team returns to the pool this weekend in Columbia, S.C., for a triangular-meet against UNC-Wilmington and South Carolina. The meet will get underway at 1 p.m. CT at the Carolina Natatorium in the Blatt P.E. Center in Columbia.
The Commodores (1-3 overall, 0-2 SEC) will be up against some stiff competition on Saturday, as it will serve as a great tune up for the SEC Championships in February.
UNC-Wilmington holds a record of 9-2 while USC is 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the SEC.
During the fall, the young Vanderbilt squad showed a lot of promise as they swam to personal best marks. The ‘Dores closed out the fall season with their best meet of the season as they swam to a second place finish at the Hilltopper Invite.
VU’s Erika Deardorf was one of the many highlights of the weekend as she rewrote the school record book in the 1650-yard freestyle. The Woodlands, Texas native topped the previous record by nearly 17 seconds.
In the freestyle events, the Commodores are led by Jennifer Molchan, Allie Voss, Chelsea Morey, Sarah Lynch, Jess Eccher and Amy Salce.
Sophomore standout Laura Dillon has emerged as the team’s top breaststroker, while Voss and Lynch have made great strides and are consistently among the team’s top three breaststrokers.
Vanderbilt will look to Morey, Eccher and Salce to be strong in the backstroke events as well.
