Pregame Notes

– The Commodores and Lady Vols are meeting for the 60th time overall–Vanderbilt’s most contested rivalry.

– Tennessee holds a 52-7 advantage in the series. The Lady Vols have never lost to the Commodores in 24 previous meetings in Knoxville.

– The series dates back to Nov. 21, 1979, a 77-53 win for the Lady Vols.

– The Commodores are looking to take their second win from the Lady Vols in the last three meetings. Vanderbilt won consecutive games in the series in 2001 and 2002, and took two out of three during a stretch from 1985 to 1987.

First Half

– Vanderbilt started off the game with a steal by Lauren Lueders at the 19:49 mark of the first half.

Merideth Marsh hit a 3-pointer at the 18:29 mark of the first half, giving her 46 on the season and 214 for her career.

Jessica Mooney gave VU a huge defensive effort with a steal at the 16:17 mark of the first half.

– At the 15:13 mark of the first half, Elan Brown sunk a jumper and gave Vanderbilt some much-needed offense.

Tiffany Clarke had a hard driving layup at the 14:09 mark of the first half, giving Vanderbilt’s freshman over half of the points in the game for the Commodores.

Rebecca Silinski, seeing her first action in seven games, grabbed a much-needed steal at the 10:17 mark of the first half.

– With a free throw at the 7:06 mark of the first half, Vanderbilt ended a 7 minute, 3 second scoring drought.

– With a 3-pointer at the 6:37 mark of the first half, Gabby Smith put Vanderbilt into double-digit scoring off a dish by Elan Brown. She bookended that with another 3-point jumper at the 5:53 mark and a huge defensive rebound for the Commodores.

Merideth Marsh followed Gabby Smith’s lead, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers at the 5:23 and 4:37 marks, respectively. This was part of a 12-2 Vanderbilt run in just over one minute of game time.

– With a 3-pointer at the 1:54 mark of the first half, Elan Brown brought Vanderbilt within four.

– At one point, Vanderbilt was down by 20, but came back to only be down by eight at halftime. Merideth Marsh led all scorers with 13 points. Vanderbilt shot 87.5% from the charity stripe (7-8) over Tennessee’s 57.1% (4-7) and the `Dores also doubled the Vols’ effort from 3-point land.

– The only category Tennessee led at halftime was field goal percentage. The Lady Vols shot 46.9% (15-32) to the Commodores’ 42.1% (8-19).

– The Commodores are 1-2 when trailing at halftime, but 7-0 when VU makes more threes than their opponent.

Second Half

Elan Brown started out the second half with authority, sinking a 3-pointer for the Commodores at the 19:06 mark.

Merideth Marsh bookended Brown’s 3-pointer with her own at the 18:17 mark of the second half and once again at the 17:40 mark.

– Marsh then sunk two free throws at the 17:14 mark to bring the Commodores within one point of the Lady Vols’ lead.

Lauren Lueders made a big offensive statement of her own, another Vanderbilt 3-pointer at the 15:54 mark of the second half.

Jessica Mooney came out of the first media timeout with a quick layup at the 15:06 mark of the second half, tying the score at 45 apiece.

– After two quick Lady Vols baskets, Gabby Smith put the Commodores back within two with a jumper at the 10:51 mark of the second half.

– At the 10:23 mark of the second half, Tiffany Clarke made a huge steal for the `Dores. She bookended that with a strong layup drawing a foul. She made the three-point play bringing the Commodores within three.

Jessica Mooney made a similar play at the 8:02 mark of the second half, also drawing the foul.

– Both the Commodores and the Lady Vols held strong defensively, keeping each other scoreless for over four minutes.

Elan Brown hit a much-needed jumper to bring the Commodores back within two at the 1:46 mark of the second half.

Postgame Notes

– Vanderbilt falls to 13-5 on the season, 2-3 in SEC play.

Merideth Marsh led all scorers with 23 points on the night. She also led Vanderbilt with seven rebounds. Marsh now has 1,090 points for her career, two shy of former Commodore guard Dee Davis, who is 24th on the VU career scoring list with 1,092.

– Freshman Elan Brown scored in double-figures for the second consecutive game after a career-high 11-point performance against Georgia.

– Brown and classmate Gabby Smith each posted career-high’s in minutes played Sunday. Brown played 29 minutes while Smith saw 24.

Lauren Lueders had five rebounds and five assists for the Commodores. Her five assists tie a career high she last reached against Alabama on Feb. 1, 2009.

– The Commodores now look towards their next SEC contest at Auburn on Jan. 21st. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. CT.
