MT opens season with doubleheader Saturday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Doubleheaders are most often played at a baseball diamond, but on Saturday, Vanderbilt’s Currey Tennis Center will host a doubleheader of its own when Vanderbilt’s men’s tennis team opens its season with matches against Belmont and Chattanooga.

Ranked No. 55 in the preseason, Vanderbilt will open its 2010 spring season at 9 a.m. Saturday when Belmont makes the short drive over to Vanderbilt’s campus. The Commodores will follow their match against Belmont by facing Chattanooga at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

“We are excited to start the season,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Ian Duvenhage said. “Our players have worked hard this offseason and I think everyone is ready to get the season underway.”

The Commodores return five of its top six players from last year and welcome the addition of freshman Ryan Lipman, who will begin the season ranked No. 29 in singles. Lipman is one of three players ranked in singles. Also ranked are sophomore Charlie Jones, who is ranked No. 53 and senior Vijay Paul, who is ranked No. 71.

Vanderbilt also has three doubles teams ranked, led by the duo of Adam Baker and Charlie Jones, which is ranked No. 24. Vijay Paul and Ryan Lipman are ranked 30th in doubles and Paul and Bryant Salcedo are ranked 57th.

Admission is free to all regular season home matches.
