Lacrosse earns No. 11 preseason ranking

BALTIMORE, Md. — The Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team has earned a preseason ranking of No. 11 in the 2010 preview issue of Lacrosse Magazine, U.S. Lacrosse announced recently.

Head Coach Cathy Swezey’s Commodores went 10-7 last season, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year. Eleven of 12 starters return for Vanderbilt following the graduation of All-American Cara Giordano.

Senior captain Sarah Downing headlines the list of returners on the offense end after breaking VU’s single-season records for goals (55) and points (81). Defensively, senior captain Alex Mundy highlights the group in front of sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Wills, a member of the 2009-10 U.S. Developmental Team.

The Commodores open the 2010 season on Sunday, Feb. 14, playing host to No. 5 Duke at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. CT.
