Vanderbilt welcomes the Southern Miss Golden Eagles to Memorial Gym for a Saturday afternoon tip-off. The game tips off at 2 p.m. CT, with game airing live on FSN South, ESPN360.com, and ESPN Full Court. If a television is not nearby, the action can be heard on the Vanderbilt-ISP Radio Network and vucommodores.com, with Joe Fisher and Tim Thompson courtside calling all of the action.
The Commodores have won three straight since the end of final exams, including their last time out, an 86-48 win over Manhattan on December 30. Vanderbilt limited Manhattan to only 25.8% from the floor and outrebounded the Jaspers, 57-41, and the specialty stats of the game leaned heavily toward the Commodores. VU outscored Manhattan 47-24 in points in the paint, 16-5 on second-chance points, 18-8 in fast break points, and 46-23 in bench points. Vanderbilt also blocked 10 shots, a Stallings-era best and one off the school record set 15 years ago.
Freshman John Jenkins led the team in scoring for the second consecutive game, scoring 15 points in 26 minutes of action. A.J. Ogilvy also added 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and three blocks to aid the Commodore effort. Four VU players scored nine points, and Festus Ezeli had a career-high four blocks for Vanderbilt.
Sophomore Jeffery Taylor, who had a season-low six points in a foul-filled 12 minutes vs. Manhattan, leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.0 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, respectively. Senior Jermaine Beal adds 12.7 points per game, and Ogilvy chips in 12.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest.
Saturday’s meeting with Southern Miss will be the second all-time between the two schools. The only other meeting came in the third round of the National Invitational Touranment on March 21, 1986, at Memorial Gym. Southern Miss won that game, 95-88.
