Men's golf fourth at Hummingbird

SAPPHIRE, N.C. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team moved up three spots to finish fourth on the final day of the 2009 Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

Head Coach Tom Shaw’s Commodores shot the third-lowest round of the day, an even-par 284 that included rounds of par or better from senior Hudson Johnson, junior Ryan Haselden and freshman Will Snipes.

Haselden paced the Commodores with a two-day total of 141, good for one-under on Sapphire Valley’s par-71, 6,767-yard layout. He earned his second Top 10 finish of the fall season.

Johnson shot steady one-under on Tuesday to return to even-par for the event. He placed in a tie for 14th. Playing in his third collegiate event, Snipes shot even-par on Tuesday to finish at two-over in a tie for 28th.

Sophomore Trey DelGreco also scored for the Commodores on Tuesday, shooting a three-over 74. He finished in a tie for 47th. Teammate Ben Klaus followed up yesterday’s one-over 72 with a six-over 77 today to drop to 54th.

Furman (-1) took the team championship by three strokes over Kentucky and East Carolina. Vanderbilt (+5) and Winthrop (+6) rounded out the top five in the 18-team field.

Paladin Garland Ferrell earned individual medalist honors with a two-day total of 135 (-7).

The Commodores have completed their fall schedule. The team’s spring slate begins on Feb. 21, 2010, with the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala.
