Black (and Gold) Friday comes to Memorial Gym

Nov. 27, 2009

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament will be played today and tomorrow at Memorial Gymnasium, with free admission for a pair of games each day.

The 16th-ranked Commodore women’s basketball team plays host to Austin Peay Friday at 2 p.m. CT. North Carolina State and Northwestern State (La.) will tip off 30 minutes after the completion of game one.

On Saturday, the consolation game will be played at 2 p.m. followed by the championship.

In addition to free admission, Vanderbilt will be giving away six exciting packages during the two-day event. Fans will have the chance to win one-of-a-kind experiences — including the opportunity to sit on the Commodore bench for a game or to have a pre-game meal and “chalk talk” with coaches — and great VU prizes — such as autographed jerseys and tickets to future games.

Vanderbilt (4-0) has hosted a tournament on the weekend after Thanksgiving for each of the past 10 seasons. The Commodores are 20-0 in those games after defeating Davidson and Virginia Tech a season ago.

This year’s Commodores have been led by juniors Hannah Tuomi and Jence Rhoads. Tuomi is averaging 14.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, with Rhoads adding 12.8 points and 6.8 assists per contest.
