NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team kicks off its 2009-10 season on Sunday as defending Patriot League champion Lehigh visits Memorial Gymnasium for a 2 p.m. CT tip.

Commodore Head Coach Melanie Balcomb enters her eighth season in the Music City on the heels of the program’s sixth Southeastern Conference Tournament championship. Vanderbilt went 26-9 a year ago and advanced the Sweet 16 for the 14th time in school history.

Senior Merideth Marsh and junior Hannah Tuomi each earned second-team All-Conference accolades from league coaches in a preseason poll. Marsh averaged 10.7 points per game a season ago while shooting 39 percent from behind the arc. Tuomi was scoring 11.4 points per game before an ankle injury forced her to miss Vanderbilt’s final seven contests.

The Mountain Hawks arrived in Nashville three days ago and defeated neighboring Lipscomb, 77-60, in Allen Arena on Friday. Junior Erica Prosser led Lehigh with 27 points.

This is the first meeting between Vanderbilt and Lehigh.
