Commodores finish 9th at PGA WEST

LA QUINTA, Calif. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team finished ninth out of 13 teams in The Prestige on the TPC Stadium Course at PGA WEST.

Junior Ryan Haselden ended the event in a tie for 11th place in a field of 80 golfers with a three-day, even-par total of 216. Haselden parred 16 holes during Tuesday’s final round.

VU’s low score of the final round came from senior Chris Rockwell, who carded a two-under 70 to bring his overall score back to four-over. Rockwell moved from 38th into a tie for 22nd place.

As a team, Vanderbilt was five-over on the day. The Commodores finished just two strokes behind co-host UC Davis. TCU ran away with the team championship by shooting 12-under on Tuesday. The Horned Frogs (-14) were 16 strokes ahead of co-host Stanford (+2). Washington (+5), UCLA (+8) and Southern California (+8) rounded out the top five, followed by San Diego (+15), Pepperdine (+16), UC Davis (+19), Vanderbilt (+21) and UCF (+24).

Individually, TCU’s Daniel Jennevret (-12) won by six strokes over UCLA’s Pedro Figueiredo (-6).

Also scoring for the Commodores were sophomore Ben Klaus and Trey DelGreco. Klaus carded a two-over 74 to finish at plus-16, while DelGreco’s five-over 77 gave him a 13-over total. Senior Hudson Johnson shot a nine-over 81 that included only five pars.

The Stadium Course at PGA WEST measured 7,026 yards and played to par 72 this week.

The Commodores will close out their 2009 fall schedule next month at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina in Cashiers, N.C., before taking a winter hiatus until mid-February.
