Commodores host Mason Rudolph Championships

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt men’s and women’s golf teams will host the 2009 Mason Rudolph Championships this weekend at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. Play for both tournaments begins with fixed tee times on the number one and 10 tees on both the North and South courses on Friday morning, Sept. 25, at 8 a.m. CT.

Both event will feature 17 teams and a 54-hole format, with 18 holes scheduled to be played on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The men’s tournament will take place on the South Course, a 7,100-yard, par-71 layout, while the women’s championship will be played on the North Course, a par-72, 6,217-yard setup.

The men’s championship was won last year by South Carolina (-13), with runner-up Kentucky’s Ben Fuqua (-15) taking individual medalist honors by seven strokes. The Gamecocks return to defend their championship this year, joining Vanderbilt, Ole Miss and Mississippi State as this year’s teams from the Southeastern Conference. The field also includes Akron, Arkansas State, Belmont, Charleston, Davidson, Georgia Tech, Lipscomb, Memphis, MTSU, Notre Dame. South Alabama, Western Carolina and UT-Martin.

The women’s field will feature 12 teams ranked in the latest Golfworld/NGCA poll, including the number one, two, three, and four ranked teams in the country and eight out of the top 10 teams in the poll. The teams included in this year’s field include Alabama (No. 7), Arizona (No. 17), Arizona State (No. 1), Auburn (No. 8), Duke (No. 10), Florida (No. 29), Georgia (No. 14), LSU (No. 11), Oklahoma State (No. 4), South Carolina (No. 47), Stanford (No. 22), Texas (No. 26), Tulane (No. 31), UCLA (No. 3), USC (No. 2), and Virginia (No. 9).

UCLA won last year’s women’s team crown with a score of 14-under par, 850 (287-277-286), which set a new Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship record, and the Bruins’ Sydnee Michaels won medalist honors with an 11-under, 205 (68-70-67).
