Lipman advances to semifinals at USTA Nationals

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Vanderbilt incoming freshman Ryan Lipman continued his successful run at the USTA Boys’ National Championships on Friday as he earned his fifth win of the tournament to advance to the semifinals of the Boys’ 18 Singles draw.

Lipman, the tournament’s No. 8 seed, advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-0 win over No. 3 seed Denis Kudla Friday afternoon. With the win, Lipman will now face No. 13 seed Raymond Sarmiento in the semifinals on Saturday. Lipman is one of two players who have not dropped a set yet in this tournament.

The USTA Boys’ National Championships is considered the most prestigious junior tournament for U.S. citizens. The tournament began with 192 players and Lipman is one of four remaining. Whoever wins the main draw will receive a wild card into the main draw of the 2009 U.S. Open, which begins August 31.
