NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time in as many years, the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team will open the spring 2010 season at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in hopes of advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Commodores were selected as the No. 2 seed in the Knoxville, Tenn. region after serving as the host and No. 1 seed in 2009.
Vanderbilt will join in-state rival Tennessee, TCU and Texas as the four teams in the weekend kick off. Tennessee will serve as the host and No. 1 seed while TCU and Texas will be the third and fourth seed. The No. 1 seed will face the No. 4 seed while the No. 2 and No. 3 team square off. Each team is guaranteed two matches as the winners of the first two matches will play each other as will the losers of the first two matches.
The Commodores first round match-up with TCU will mark the third time that the two schools have met in the ITA-Indoor event. The Horned Frogs edged the Commodores 5-2 in 2007 and 4-3 in 2006.
The ITA Kick-Off Weekend features 15 host sites around the country with four teams at each site. The winner of each region will be invited to play in the Feb. 12-15 ITA National Team Indoor Championship at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.
