NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s tennis player Catherine Newman was named to the second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV women’s at-large team on Thursday, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A native of Greensboro, N.C., Newman also earned second-team plaudits in 2008 for her work in the classroom, where she sports a 3.878 GPA in civil engineering. On the court, Newman played No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles in 2009, where she posted a 21-16 record in singles.
Newman has been named to the Dean’s List every semester she has been at Vanderbilt. She was also named to the 2007 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll.
Last year, Newman became the first Vanderbilt women’s tennis player to be named an Academic All-American since Annie Menees was named to the third team in 2004.
Because Newman was not a first team selection, she will not be on the national Academic All-America ballot.
