ALVATON, Ky. — The Commodore men’s golf team is set to open NCAA Central Region Championship play on Thursday, May 14, at The Club at Olde Stone.
Vanderbilt has been grouped with Middle Tennessee State and Austin Peay for Thursday’s first of three rounds in the 54-hole event. The Commodores, Blue Raiders and Governors are scheduled to leave from the 10th tee with times beginning at 9:40 a.m. CT.
From this weekend’s field of 14 teams, five will advance to the NCAA National Championship in Toledo, Ohio, at the end of May. Vanderbilt placed fifth in the 2007 West Region Championship to make Nationals for the third time in six years.
Designed by internationally acclaimed golf architect Arthur Hills, The Course at Olde Stone will play at 7,372 yards with a par of 72. Olde Stone is located just 60 miles north of Nashville on Interstate-65.
“This is a really challenging course,” third-year Vanderbilt Head Coach Tom Shaw said. “There is a challenge on every hole. The greens are playing extremely fast with lots of undulation, there’s plenty of length, and then you factor in the wind. But I think the guys will be comfortable in their grouping and we’re looking forward to getting out there tomorrow.”
Shaw has brought seniors Jon Curran and Tyler Matthews, junior Hudson Johnson, and sophomores Ryan Haselden and Adam Hofmann to the event.
Curran earned All-America honors in 2007 after placing second at the NCAA Regional and eighth at Nationals. He owns three Top 10 finishes this season and won last year’s Seminole Intercollegiate.
Haselden helped the Commodores win a team championship at this year’s Seminole Intercollegiate with his medalist finish. Johnson also owns an individual championship from the Hummingbird Intercollegiate this past fall.
