WG is 8th Seed at East Regional

April 27, 2009

The Vanderbilt women’s golf team was named as the number eight seed in the East Regional in Gainesville, Fla., in an announcement made today by the NCAA. The Commodores will play May 7-9 at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.

The Commodores will make their 10th consecutive appearance at an NCAA Regional and their 11th appearance overall. Vanderbilt has won one Regional Title, which came at the NCAA Central Regional in 2004, and Jacqui Concolino claimed medalist honors at the Central Regional in 2007, becoming the only player in Vanderbilt history to win an individual NCAA Regional Title.

“The post-season is always my favorite time of year,” said head coach Greg Allen. “It’s like the start of a new season and no matter how anyone’s season has gone throughout the year, it all starts over once Regionals come around. Starting Thursday morning, 63 teams will start at even par and whoever plays the best for three rounds advances to Nationals. It’s that simple. I like the fact that our team will have school and final exams behind us and all we will have to do is play golf.”

Eleven SEC teams landed a bid to the NCAA Regionals, and Vanderbilt is one of eight SEC teams that will play in Gainesville next weekend – Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Ole Miss, and South Carolina will join the Commodores at the regional. Kentucky will play at the Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio, and LSU and Arkansas will take part in the West Regional in Tempe, Ariz.

The NCAA has three sites, the East Regional in Gainesville, Fla., the Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio, and the West Regional in Tempe, Ariz., and will fill those sites with 21 teams. Play begins at those three sites on May 7th. Eight teams advance from those three sites to the NCAA Championship, which takes place at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mill, Maryland, May 19-22.
