WT All-SEC honors announced

April 22, 2009

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Vanderbilt’s Catherine Newman and Jackie Wu were among the 24 tennis players named to the 2009 All-SEC teams this week. The selections were chosen by a vote of the leagues coaches.

It marks the third time that Newman has been awarded to the All-SEC team after earning first-team honors as a freshman and second-team accolades last season. The Commodores number one singles player has compiled a 19-15 mark against some of the best players in the country. The Greensboro, N.C. native has posted seven wins over ranked opponents during the 2008-09 season and has been ranked as high as No. 28 in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Wu garnered all-conference honors in her first collegiate campaign after posting an impressive combined 26-9 singles record. The Holmdel, N.J. native is ranked in the top-55 in both singles (No. 57) and doubles (No. 38). Wu recorded an impressive 6-4 record against the SEC while competing at the No. 2 slot for the majority of the dual season. The freshman leads the team in wins over ranked opponents with nine, including a straight set win over 11th-ranked Georgia Rose of Northwestern in the fall.

Tennessee Co-Head Coaches Mike Patrick and Sonia Hahn-Patrick were named SEC Coach of the Year, Arkansas’ Aurelija Miseviciute was named Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year while Georgia’s Chelsey Gullickson was named SEC Freshman of the Year.
