ST. LOUIS, Mo. — Vanderbilt senior Christina Wirth has received honorable mention on the 2009 State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Saturday.
Wirth led the Commodores to their 14th appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16 after earning Most Valuable Player honors en route to Vanderbilt’s sixth Southeastern Conference Tournament championship. A native of Mesa, Ariz., Wirth averaged over 16.6 points per game this season.
The Seton Catholic product elevated her game in the postseason to average 22.7 points and 6.5 rebounds in the SEC and NCAA Tournaments. She was a unanimous All-SEC selection by league coaches as she moved into ninth place on Vanderbilt’s career scoring list. For her career, the Commodores won 99 of the 135 games Wirth played in, a winning percentage of over 73 percent.
Recently, Wirth was named Vanderbilt’s female nominee for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship, which honors the SEC’s top scholar-athletes among all sports. That award will be announced on Monday, the same day that Wirth will be in St. Louis to accept a prestigious post-graduate scholarship from the WBCA.
The WBCA promotes women’s basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls. For additional information about the WBCA, please visit wbca.org.
A total of 40 student-athletes were recognized Saturday by the WBCA, including a 10-member team State Farm Coaches’ All-America Team. The list was chosen at an in-person meeting of the selection committee during the 2009 WBCA National Convention.
