Bowlers travel to Alabama

Feb. 27, 2009

BESSEMER, Ala. – Vanderbilt’s top-ranked bowling team travels to the Birmingham suburb of Bessemer this weekend for the annual Holiday Bowl hosted by Alabama A & M.

It marks a return back to traditional opponents after last week’s competition at the Indiana Hoosier Classic, where the Commodores reached the semi-finals in the major national club team tournament.

A year ago Vanderbilt placed fourth here, bowling consistent numbers but never catching fire as it did two years ago when it won the team championship. Last year Josie Earnest narrowly missed the individual title.

Earnest returns to the scene along with teammates Tara Kane, Michelle Peloquin, Brittni Hamilton, Karen Grygiel and Brittany Garcia.

“This tournament is total pin fall after six traditional team games Saturday and six more Sunday,” says Vanderbilt Coach John Williamson. “It’s a typical strong field and the winner will have to bowl well and catch a break or two along the way.”

Saturday’s games begin at 10 a.m. while Sunday’s action starts at 8 o’clock at the Holiday Bowl Fun Center on Bessemer Highway.
