No. 12 ‘Dores look to rebound vs. UMBC

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The No. 12 Commodore lacrosse team returns to action against UMBC Saturday at 1 p.m. CT in the VU Lacrosse Complex. The `Dores look to rebound after a heartbreaking loss to then No. 9 North Carolina 14-13 in overtime to open their season on Feb. 15.

Coach Cathy Swezey’s squad (0-1) saw outstanding debut performances from freshmen Ally Carey and Alex Priddy against UNC, while ALC Preseason All-Conference team members Cara Giordano and Carter Foote looked impressive as well.

Carey totaled two goals and an assist on four shots, and Priddy recorded four points on three goals and an assist in five shots. Giordano netted two goals and an assist. Foote scored two goals on four shots.

The Retrievers (1-0) will head to Nashville fresh from a 19-1 victory over Howard on the road to open their season on Feb. 14. Senior midfielder Kara Dorr finished that contest with with a game-high four goals and five points, both career highs.

Senior attack Abbey Swift, sophomore midfielder Meagan Linkous and freshman midfielder Bria Phillips each notched hat tricks as well. Junior goalkeeper Kate Quick started for UMBC and tallied two saves in 22 minutes to help garner her the winning decision. Senior goalie Susie Sweeney also stopped one shot in 24 minutes of action.

The Retrievers, who were picked to finish sixth out of seven teams in the America East Conference, return 14 players with starting experience from last season’s squad. The 2008 team finished in a tie for fourth place in the AEC.
