Fans invited to football awards banquet

Feb. 16, 2009

A limited amount of tickets are available to Commodore fans wanting to attend the Vanderbilt Football Bowl Celebration and Awards Banquet next month in Cool Springs.

The Bowl Celebration and Awards Banquet will be open to the public for the first time during Head Coach Bobby Johnson’s tenure at Vanderbilt. The event is scheduled for Sunday, March 29 at the Embassy Suites Cool Springs, 820 Crescent Centre Drive. The festivities will begin at 1 p.m.

The event comes one day after Johnson’s Commodores conduct the Black & Gold Scrimmage, the team’s annual featured attraction of Spring Practice. The scrimmage is slated for March 28, starting at 10 a.m., in Vanderbilt Stadium.

“This is a tremendous way for Vanderbilt fans to cap off a wonderful weekend of Commodore football activities,” Associate Director of Student Athletics Brian Reese said. “We will offer a limited number of tickets to Commodore followers wanting to join us for what promises to be an exciting event and celebration of the 2008 season.”

Tickets are available for $40 for adults and $20 for children 10 years of age and under. The deadline to reserve your seat is Monday, March 23.

The 2008 Commodores will go down as one of the best in recent team gridiron history. With less than 10 starters back from 2007 and little preseason fanfare, Johnson’s squad opened the season with five consecutive victories, including Southeastern Conference wins over South Carolina, Ole Miss and Auburn. The streak helped Vanderbilt garner national attention, attract ESPN’s College Football GameDay Show to campus, and push the Commodores into the Top 25.

The Commodores earned bowl eligibility for the first time since 1982 with a nationally televised 31-24 victory at Kentucky.

On New Year’s Eve, the Commodores capped a 7-6 season with a thrilling 16-14 victory over Boston College before a partisan crowd at the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl in Nashville’s LP Field. The win was Vanderbilt’s third against a nationally ranked opponent during the season, and the program’s first postseason triumph in 53 years.
