The Vanderbilt Commodores play its second game in 42 hours on Saturday afternoon when Ole Miss comes to town for an interdivisional SEC game. The game tips off at noon CT, and will be televised on CBS, and the action can be heard live on the Vanderbilt-ISP Radio Network and vucommodores.com, with Joe Fisher and Tim Thompson on the call. Vanderbilt and Ole Miss will meet for the 129th time on Saturday afternoon, with the Commodores holding a 69-39 advantage in the series. VU leads 45-5 in Nashville, and has won the last three meetings with the Rebels at Memorial Gym. Vanderbilt head coach Kevin Stallings has a career 6-4 record against Ole Miss, and a 3-1 mark at Memorial Gym. The home team has dominated the series as of late, winning 19 of the last 22 meetings.
Vanderbilt won its second consecutive SEC contest Thursday evening with a 79-74 win over Alabama at Memorial Gym. Commodores A.J. Ogilvy and Jermaine Beal led the team with 20 points apiece, and Ogilvy tallied his third double-double of the season with a 12-rebound effort against the Crimson Tide. The Commodores mounted a comeback early in the second half after trailing by seven at the break, and held the Rebels to 32.1% shooting (9-28) in the second stanza. Meanwhile, Vanderbilt’s offense got on track in the second period, shooting 53.6% from the floor and 50% from three, and led the Commodores to their first victory of the season after trailing at the half.
The two game winning streak is a first for Vanderbilt since winning six consecutive games from December 10 to January 3.
After posting the double-double against the Crimson Tide, Ogilvy pushed his scoring average on the 2008-09 season to 14.7 points per game. Junior Jermaine Beal is next at 12.8 after posting back-to-back 20-point efforts for the first time in his career, freshman guard Jeffery Taylor adds 12.6 points per game, and freshman guard Brad Tinsley chips in 10.4 points per contest. Ogilvy leads all VU players on the glass with 7.0 rebounds per game. Taylor pulls down 6.3 rebounds per contest and is second on the team behind Ogilvy.
Ole Miss enters the game with a 13-9 overall record, and 4-4 in league play. The Rebels have been without the services of Trevor Gaskins, Eniel Polynice, and Chris Warren, three experienced players from last year’s team, because of injury. However, the rest of Rebels have picked up their game, with junior David Huertas leading the way. Huertas averages 19.3 points per game, while freshman Terrico White has had an impressive rookie campaign for Ole Miss, averaging 10.6 points per game and 15.6 points in conference play.
