– Vanderbilt started juniors Jermaine Beal and George Drake, sophomore A.J. Ogilvy, and freshmen Jeffery Taylor and Brad Tinsley. This marks the first time that Vanderbilt has used this starting line-up this season, and the ninth different starting lineup for the Commodores this season.
– Beal leads the team with 56 career starts, including 51 straight. Drake made his fourth start of the season and fifth of his career. Taylor made his 21st start of his career, while Ogilvy returned to the starting lineup after coming off of the bench against South Carolina. Ogilvy made the 51st start of his career. Tinsley started for the 18th time in his career.
First half notes – Vanderbilt 41 Auburn 36
– Auburn won the opening tip.
– With Brad Tinsley’s three-pointer at the 16:35 mark in the first half, Vanderbilt extended its streak of consecutive games (719) with a three-pointer, dating back to when the three-point line was established in the 1986-87 season. The Commodores streak ranks second only to UNLV (726) for the longest streak in Division I basketball. Vanderbilt, UNLV and Princeton (612) are the only three schools in college basketball to accomplish this feat.
– Jermaine Beal lead all Vanderbilt scorers with nine points in the first half. Jeffery Taylor added eight points for the Commodores.
– The Commodores shot 57.7% in the first half (15-26), its best first half percentage of the SEC season and its best since shooting 71.4% (15-21) against Alabama A&M on December 20, 2008. Vanderbilt moved to 4-0 on the season when shooting above 50% from the floor.
– Vanderbilt outrebounded Auburn, 18-15, in the first half.
– The Commodores had 10 assists in the first half, its best total in league play so far this season and the team’s highest first half total since dishing out 12 assists against Alabama A&M on December 20.
– Vanderbilt made five of 10 threes in the first half – Beal made three, and Tinsley added two. The Commodores last made five threes in a half at Kentucky on January 10.
Postgame Notes – Vanderbilt 82 Auburn 75
– With the win, Vanderbilt improves to 13-8, 2-5 in SEC play. Auburn drops to 13-8, 2-4 in the SEC.
– The win against Auburn ended a four game losing streak and the first road SEC win for the Commodores this season. Vanderbilt is now 2-5 in designated road wins in 2008-09, and 1-3 in SEC competition.
– Vanderbilt shot 60.9% from the floor (28-46), a season best from the floor for the Commodores. The Commodores also converted a season-best 58.8% from three (10-17) against the Tigers.
– Vanderbilt won for the first time at Auburn since February 16, 2005. The Commodores have won five out of their last six meetings with the Tigers.
– The Commodores now lead the all-time series, 78-51, against Auburn, and 31-29 at Auburn.
– Vanderbilt outrebounded Auburn, 35-22. The Commodores have outrebounded their last two opponents, 76-51. VU outscored Auburn, 13-3, on second chance points.
– Vanderbilt outscored Auburn 30-26, in the paint, and 12-10 in bench points. Auburn scored 22 points off of turnovers, compared to 10 for Vanderbilt. Auburn outscored Vanderbilt, 6-0, in fast break points.
– The Commodores had 19 assists to 10 turnovers, its first positive assist to turnover ratio game since the UMass game on January 3. Vanderbilt had 19 assists and 12 turnovers against the Minutemen.
– Vanderbilt converted on only 16 of 31 (51.6%) free throws against Auburn, its lowest percentage of the season. Vanderbilt’s previous low came against Florida on January 25th when the Commodores shot 61.1% from the floor. It was the first time all season Vanderbilt has shot better from the floor than they have from the charity stripe.
– Vanderbilt’s nine steals was the most since Vanderbilt had 10 steals against Georgia on January 14.
– The 82 points scored against Auburn is a new season high for the Commodores in an SEC game. It’s the most in a game since Vanderbilt scored 84 against St. Francis on December 31.
– Vanderbilt had four players score in double figures – Jermaine Beal (21), A.J. Ogilvy 14), Jeffery Taylor (14), and Brad Tinsley (13).
– Four out of the five Vanderbilt starters scored in double figures, with the lone exception being George Drake, who missed double digits by two points.
– Eight out of the nine players that logged minutes against Auburn had at least one steal. Brad Tinsley led the Commodores with two steals.
– Saturday’s game marked the first time this season Vanderbilt has defeated an opponent after they shoot 50% or better from the floor.
Individual Notes
– Jermaine Beal led all Vanderbilt scorers with a career-high 21 points on seven made three pointers. The seven made threes for Beal is a new career high – he was 7-for-8 from beyond the arc and 7-for-10 from the floor. Beal has now scored in double figures in 15 games this season.
– A.J. Ogilvy and Jeffery Taylor each scored 14 points for the Commodores. Ogilvy scored in double figures for the 16th time this season, and for the 48th time in his two year career. Taylor scored in double figures for the 16th time in his career.
– Taylor was 6-for-7 from the floor against Auburn.
– Brad Tinsley’s 13 point game was his 14th double-digit game of the season, and his second consecutive game in double figures.
– Ogilvy scored in double figures for the first time in four games, ending the longest double digit scoring drought of his career.
– Taylor led all Vanderbilt players with nine rebounds.
– Ogilvy and Taylor each dished out five assists to lead the team. The five assists was a new career high for Taylor, and tied a career high for Ogilvy (at South Carolina, 2/9/08).
