Jan. 16, 2009

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt’s track and field squad opens the 2009 season as it travels northeast to Lexington, Ky., to compete in this weekend’s highly competitive Kentucky Invitational.

The event will get underway Friday with select field events starting at 5 p.m. ET. The field events will start again Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. with running events to follow at 12:30 p.m.

At last year’s Kentucky Invite, VU received strong performances in the 3000-meter run from Kristabel Doebel-Hickok and Adrienne DiRaddo, as they both finished in the top 15. Sheri Sullivan finished in 13th place in the long jump, clearing 17 feet with a jump of 17’5.25, while fellow freshman Kate Southcote-Want finished the mile in 5:15.22, good for 22nd place.

The Commodores will be joined by a stacked field, including six teams ranked in the USTFCCCA preseason poll (No. 4 Tennessee, No. 13 Florida, No.16 South Carolina, No. 20 Miami (Fla.), No. 22 Kentucky and No. 25 Louisville). Joining Vanderbilt and Kentucky from the SEC Conference this weekend is Auburn, Georgia and Ole Miss.
