M. Golf places 11th at Olympia Fields

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team finished 11th after the third and final round of the 2008 Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational presented by Srixon.

As a team, Vanderbilt shot an 18-over 298 on Sunday, dropping three from eighth to 11th in the 15-team field. Sophomore Adam Hofmann paced the Commodores for the second time this weekend, shooting a final-round two-over 72 to finish in 25th place at eight-over.

Host Illinois recorded a one-under 279 over the final 18 holes, the only under-par round of the tournament, to claim an 11-stroke victory over BIG TEN rival Indiana. Oklahoma State, Stanford and Texas rounded out the top five.

Individually, Zach Barlow of Illinois and Alex Martin of Indiana shared medalist honors at one-under (209). Penn State’s Kevin Foley finished third at even-par.

Senior Jon Curran carded a four-over 74 on Sunday to place 32nd (+11) in the 75-player field, while junior Hudson Johnson was only one stroke behind at 12-over, tied for 33rd.

Freshman Trey DelGreco shot a six-over 76 in his third collegiate round, scoring for the Commodores’ for the first time in his young career. He would finish in a tie for 56th. Senior Tyler Matthews finished in a tie for 35th after an eight-over third round.

The north course at the Olympia Fields Country Club has hosted four major golf championships, including the 2003 United States Open.

Vanderbilt returns home next weekend to play host to the 2008 Mason Rudolph Championship. The men’s and women’s events will be played simultaneously on the south and north courses, respectively. Tournament play begins at 8 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 and continues through Sunday, Sept. 28.
