MG heads into Reunion finale in fourth

MADISON, Miss. — The Vanderbilt men’s golf team stands in fourth place after the first day of the 2008 Bank of America Intercollegiate at the Reunion Golf and Country Club. The Commodores stand only 14 strokes out of the lead jointly held by UT-Chattanooga and LSU with 18 holes left to play on Tuesday.

Senior Billy Whalen paced the Commodores on Monday. Whalen is tied for third place at five-under. Whalen followed up an opening round of one-under 71 with a four-under 68 in the afternoon. The Rancho Palos verdes, Calif., native stands only four strokes behind first-day leader Jonathan Randolph of Mississippi.

Junior All-American Jon Curran shot the Commodores’ low first round, a two-under 70. Curran also stands in the event’s Top 20 after finishing the day at one-under. Sophomore Hudson Johnson and seniors John Ebert and Brett Lange also scored for the Commodores on Monday. Freshman Adam Hofmann is competing in the event as an individual.

The 15-team field is scheduled to play 18 more holes on Tuesday. Vanderbilt will tee off from the first hole at 8:50 p.m. CT, playing with LSU and host Ole Miss. Complete tournament results will be available at the conclusion of the event on www.golfstatresults.com
