NASHVILLE, Tenn. Fresh off its 11th straight Sweet 16 appearance, the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team starts its fall season this weekend as it travels to Greenville, S.C. to partake in the 22nd Annual Furman Fall Classic. This year¹s Furman Classic welcomes some of the nation’s top programs.

The Commodores will get the chance to square off against some of the nation’s best teams this weekend. Seven of the teams in this year’s field were ranked in the top 40 at the end of last season. The eight-team field also includes 15 singles players and six doubles teams ranked in the preseason ITA rankings.

“The Furman Classic is probably the best fall tournament and this year field will offer incredible competition,” head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “This weekend will be an introduction for three of our freshman and it will show us where we are as team and what we need to do to get better.

Two Commodores enter the season ranked in the ITA preseason poll. Junior Catherine Newman enters the fall season ranked No. 40 while senior Courtney Ulery was tabbed at No. 56. Ulery looks to have a similar fall season after posting a 13-0 record last fall. In doubles play, the 35th ranked duo of Newman and Ulery will compete together in the No. 1 draw.

Competition will begin Friday morning with doubles action set to begin at 9 a.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday. Results and a recap of each day of the tournament will be posted on vucommodores.com.
