NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As the start of the 2008-09 tennis season quickly approaches, members of Vanderbilt’s men’s tennis team recently earned preseason recognition with the release of the preseason ITA singles and doubles rankings.
Ranked in the singles poll are junior Vijay Paul and senior Nick Cromydas. Paul is ranked No. 80 and Cromydas is ranked No. 84.
After losing Ryan Preston, Vanderbilt’s No. 1 player the past three years, to graduation, both Cromydas and Paul will be among the players vying for the team’s No. 1 spot. Paul tied for the team lead with 22 wins last year, while Cromydas led the team with six wins in SEC play. Prior to the start of last season, Cromydas was ranked No. 74 in the same poll.
In doubles play, Paul and sophomore Alex Zotov are ranked No. 42 and Cromydas and sophomore Bryant Salcedo are ranked No. 46.
Cromydas and Salcedo posted a 10-5 record together last year. Paul and Zotov did not team together last season.
The Commodores will open their 2008 fall slate Sept. 19-22 at Southern Collegiates in Athens, Ga.
