NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Former Vanderbilt men’s tennis standout Bobby Reynolds advanced to the second round of the 2008 U.S. Open after defeating Tomas Zib of the Czech Republic in five sets Tuesday.

Reynolds battled back after being down two sets to one to take the final two sets to advance. Reynolds will match up against 11th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, who proceeded to the second round after defeating Ivan Navarro of Spain in four sets.

A two-time All-American at Vanderbilt, Reynolds is currently ranked No. 89 in the ATP rankings. He is competing in his fifth U.S. Open.

Reynolds led the Commodores to the NCAA Finals for the first time in school history in 2003. The Acworth, Ga., native still holds six Commodore school records.
