NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Redshirt freshman Catherine Wearn (Greensboro, N.C.) was named Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime against Belmont on Sunday.
Wearn, who sat out last year due to a knee injury, returned to action in a big way, scoring the deciding goal in the 104th minute in overtime in the Commodores 1-0 win over Belmont. It was her lone shot of the game, giving Vanderbilt the win in its first-ever regular season game against Belmont.
“I am incredibly proud of Cat,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie. “In particular I have been pleased with her work ethic and her commitment she has put in throughout her time at Vanderbilt preparing for her first match.”
The Commodores (1-0) will face another local foe on Friday as they head over to Murfreesboro to take on Middle Tennessee at 6:30 p.m. The Blue Raiders are 0-0-1 on the year after tying Jacksonville State on the road on Saturday. VU leads the all-time series, 2-0, including a 4-3 win in overtime in 2006.
