Playing in the singles draw at Wimbledon for just the second time in his career, former Vanderbilt men’s tennis player Bobby Reynolds showed little signs of inexperience at the All England Club on Wednesday when he posted his second win in three days and advanced to the third round at The Championships.
After defeating Filippo Volandri (Italy) in the first round, Reynolds rallied from one set down to defeat Canada’s Frank Dancevic, 4-6, 7-6(10), 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. Ranked No. 102, Reynolds will now face either No. 31 Feliciano Lopez (Spain) or Roko Karanusic (Croatia) in the third round.
In his match on Wednesday, Reynolds had 27 aces compared to just 13 by Dancevic. Reynolds was also dominant at the net, converting 74 percent of his net approaches compared to just 40 percent by Dancevic.
The last time Reynolds made it this far in a Grand Slam event was in 2005 when he advanced to the round of 32 at the Australian Open.
In addition to his play in singles, Reynolds is also teaming with Rajeev Ram in doubles play. The duo will face Amer Delic and Brendan Evans in the first round.
Ditty Falls In The First Round
Joining Reynolds at Wimbledon was former Vanderbilt women’s tennis player Julie Ditty. Ditty, who was making her first-ever appearance in the ladies singles draw at Wimbledon, fell in the first round on Tuesday to Timea Bacsinszky, 7-5, 6-3.
Ditty is currently ranked No. 99 in singles. She has now appeared in all three majors this season.
