NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team moved up one spot to 11th in the latest poll released Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Commodores also have four players ranked in singles, as well as a ranked doubles team.
Vanderbilt split a pair of matches last week at the SEC Women’s Tennis Tournament in Auburn, Ala. The `Dores beat state rival No. 24 Tennessee 4-0 in the quarterfinals before falling to No. 5 Florida 4-2 in the semifinals. Vanderbilt has been ranked in the top 20 all season, rising as high as No. 10.
The Commodores are also well represented in both the singles and doubles polls. Senior Amanda Taylor enjoys her highest singles ranking of the season, coming in at No. 20. The first-team All-SEC member is currently riding an eight-match winning streak in singles and has a 19-4 record in dual matches.
Sophomore Catherine Newman remains at No. 46 in the latest singles poll. Newman, who was honored with All-SEC second team honors last week, has a 14-8 dual match record and is 24-11 overall in singles on the season.
Junior Courtney Ulery is the third Commodore ranked in singles, coming in at No. 67. The Wellington, Fla., native has a 15-7 dual match record and an overall singles record of 28-7.
Senior Taka Bertrand is ranked 115th in singles. Bertrand, a first-team All-SEC member, has the team’s best dual match record at 20-3 and has won 15 of her last 16 singles matches.
The Commodore duo of Taylor and Courtney Ulery moved up seven spots to 22nd in the national doubles rankings. The Vanderbilt pair have posted a 15-6 dual match record, including an 8-3 mark in SEC matches.
Vanderbilt is enjoying a week off from competition before finding out its first-round NCAA opponent on Tuesday, April 29. The NCAA women’s tennis selection show is scheduled for 1 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday and will be aired live on ESPNEWS.
