AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 12 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opens up play in the Southeastern Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament on Friday when it faces No. 24 Tennessee at 2 p.m. at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Vanderbilt enters the match with a 17-4 overall record and a 7-4 mark in conference matches. The Commodores earned a first round bye in the conference tournament due to their fourth place finish in the regular season standings. Vanderbilt closed out the regular season with a dramatic 5-2 comeback victory over No. 23 Kentucky.
The Commodores received several postseason awards at the tournament banquet held Wednesday night. Seniors Taka Bertrand and Amanda Taylor were named first team All-SEC, while sophomore Catherine Newman received second team All-SEC accolades. Freshman Keilly Ulery was named to the All-Freshman team.
Tennessee enters the quarterfinals of the conference tournament with a 14-8 overall record. The Lady Vols defeated Mississippi State 4-0 in the first round of the tournament on Thursday. Tennessee sophomore Caitlin Whoriskey was honored with All-SEC second team honors on Wednesday night.
The Commodores and Lady Vols met earlier in the season with Vanderbilt earning a 7-0 victory. The Commodores failed to drop a set as they played one of their best matches of the season.
Tennessee leads the all-time series against Vanderbilt 28-18. However, the Commodores have won four straight in the series, including the victory earlier in the season.
