WT earns bye at SEC Tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With its 5-2 victory over No. 23 Kentucky on Saturday, No. 12 Vanderbilt finished the regular season in fourth place in the Southeastern Conference and earned a bye at next week’s conference tournament in Auburn, Ala. The Commodores will face either fifth-seeded Tennessee or No. 12 seed Mississippi State on Friday, April 18, at 2 p.m. (CT).

The Commodores defeated both Tennessee and Mississippi State in the regular season. Vanderbilt played one of its best matches of the year in its 7-0 victory over the Lady Vols on April 4. The `Dores defeated Mississippi State 4-2 in Starkville on March 30.

Vanderbilt will be looking for its first ever SEC Tournament championship. The Commodores have advanced to the championship match once, falling to Florida in the 2004 tournament. Last season, the `Dores defeated Kentucky 4-2 in the quarterfinals before falling to Florida 4-1 in the semifinals.

Other teams to receive a bye in the conference tournament include regular season champion Florida, No. 2 seed Georgia and third-seeded Arkansas.
