NASHVILLE – Senior Shan Foster was named the SEC Co-Player of the Week, along with LSU Marcus Thornton, for his performance last week against Mississippi State and Alabama. Foster becomes the first SEC basketball player to win the award four times in one season since the league began the weekly honor in 1985.
Foster, who scored a career-high 42 points against Mississippi State and tallied 21 points against Alabama, averaged 31.5 points per game last week in the two games. The 42-point game against the Bulldogs tied for the second-most points scored in a game in Vanderbilt history with Bo Wyenandt, who also scored 42 points against Alabama on February 20, 1967. Foster is the first person to score 40 points in a game since Tom Hagan tallied 44 against Mississippi State on March 8, 1969.
After missing his first six threes in the game, Foster made nine-consecutive triples, including the game-winner with 2.7 seconds to go in overtime. The nine threes equals the school record, set by Mario Moore against Wichita State on March 21, 2005, and vaulted Foster into third place on the SEC’s all-time list for threes made in a career. He now has 358 made three-pointers in his career. The 6’6 senior from Kenner, La., holds Vanderbilt’s all-time scoring record and has made and attempted the most three pointers in the history of the program.
The 42-point performance was also the best single-game scoring output in the SEC this season.
Foster won Player of the Week honors for his play against Iona, Rice, and UMass for the week of December 31-January 6, when he averaged 25.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game in three games. Foster was also named the SEC Player of the Week for his play against South Alabama and Georgia Tech November 27-Dec. 3 when he averaged 21.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game and for his 21-point, eight-rebound performance in Vanderbilt’s 77-70 win at Toledo on November 13.
Foster and the Commodores begin SEC Tournament play Thursday afternoon at the Georgia Dome when they face off against Auburn. Tip-off is set for 2:15 p.m. CST.
