NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team has three players ranked nationally in singles and one doubles team ranked in the latest rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Senior Amanda Taylor is the highest-ranked Commodore in singles, coming in at No. 29. Taylor has opened the year with a 6-1 singles record, while playing all her matches at the No. 1 position.
Sophomore Catherine Newman is rated 43rd nationally in singles. Newman also sports a 6-1 overall mark, including a win over Notre Dame’s Brook Buck.
The third Commodore ranked in singles is junior Courtney Ulery, who is ranked 48th. Ulery has put together a stellar start to the spring 2008 campaign, winning her first seven matches. Dating back to last fall, Ulery has won 20 consecutive matches, which is the longest singles winning streak in Vanderbilt history.
The `Dores also have one doubles team ranked as Taka Bertrand and Newman make their first appearance of the season in the doubles rankings, coming in at No. 33. Bertrand and Newman have only lost once in the spring season, falling to the highly-ranked duo of Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft.
Commodores Now Ranked 14th in the Country: The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team dropped two spots to 14th in the latest ITA poll. Vanderbilt has started the spring 2008 season with a 7-0 record and is the only undefeated team remaining in the Southeastern Conference. Vanderbilt has defeated four ranked opponents this season, including then-No. 9 Notre Dame.
Courtney Ulery Sets School Record for Consecutive Singles Wins: Junior Courtney Ulery recently broke the Vanderbilt record for consecutive singles victories with her 6-3, 7-5 victory over Michigan’s Whitney Taney. The win was Ulery’s 17th-consecutive singles victory, besting the previous record of 16 held by Kelly Schmandt, set in the 2004 season. Ulery has continued her win streak, with it now standing at 20 matches.
