AUBURN, Ala. — The 23rd-ranked Commodore women’s basketball team plays its final road contest of the season at Auburn on Thursday, Feb. 28, for an 8 p.m. CT tip-off.

The game will be televised by FSN South, with Dave Neal and Debbie Antonelli calling the action.

Vanderbilt (20-7, 9-3 Southeastern Conference) enjoyed a weekend bye after winning last Thursday in Arkansas, 63-50. Senior Liz Sherwood scored her 1,000th point at Vanderbilt in that contest. She currently ranks 27th all-time in scoring at the school, just ahead of current graduate assistant Caroline Williams. Sherwood needs only 11 points to continue her move up the charts past Rhonda Blades (1,017 points, 1992-95).

Junior Christina Wirth continues to lead Vanderbilt in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game in SEC play. The versatile 6-foot-1 product of Mesa, Ariz., leads the league in three-point shooting accuracy. Wirth’s classmate, Jennifer Risper, leads the Commodores in rebounding and steals while averaging 9.8 points per game.

The Lady Tigers (18-9, 6-6 SEC) are trying to avoid losing their third consecutive game after dropping a pair of road decisions at Ole Miss and Georgia. Auburn is led by 6-4 guard DeWanna Bonner, who averages 19.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per conference game.

The Commodores are guaranteed the third seed in next week’s SEC Tournament, which will be played at Nashville’s Sommet Center (formerly the Gaylord Entertainment Center). Auburn is currently in sixth place in the league, one-half game ahead of Ole Miss.

Following Thursday’s contest, Vanderbilt returns home to end the regular season with Alabama on Sunday, March 2. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 2 p.m. CT. At the conclusion of the contest, the Commodores will honor Sherwood, their lone senior, for her final home game.
