NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt senior Margie Curran was named the American Lacrosse Conference Player of the Week for impressive performances as the Commodores opened the season with a trio of victories.
Curran averaged four goals, more than two assists and five draw controls in wins over Cincinnati, UMBC and Lehigh. She opened the season with a hat-trick in a 20-4 victory against Cincinnati. At UMBC, Curran scored three more goals and controlled eight draws. Sunday at Lehigh, Curran’s six goals and three assists came up one point shy of VU’s fifth 10-point game.
This marks the 11th time that a Vanderbilt athlete has earned ALC Player of the Week honor in the past seven years. A pair of Commodores — Nicole Pugno and Kendall Thrift — earned similar recognition last season.
Curran also was recently joined by fellow senior Sasha Cielak, both second-team All-Americans last season, on the 2008 Tewaaraton Watch List. The two Commodores are among the early season favorites for the 2008 Tewaaraton Trophy, which is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award honoring the top female and male varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States. Simply, it is the lacrosse equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.
Vanderbilt returns to action in Nashville this weekend, playing host to Duquesne on Saturday, March 1, at 1 p.m. CT at the VU Lacrosse Complex.
