NASHVILLE, Tenn. –Vanderbilt baseball will open its 2008 home campaign against Evansville tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. at Hawkins Field.
The Commodores went 2-1 in their season opening weekend at the DeMarini Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. over the weekend. VU opened with an impressive 8-1 win over two-time defending national champion Oregon State on Friday. They lost 18-6 to No. 1 Arizona State on Sunday, before closing out the weekend with a three-run ninth inning rally to upend Miami (Ohio) 4-3.
Evansville dropped all three games at the Johnny Gill Memorial Tournament hosted by Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. in its season opening weekend. The Purple Aces were outscored 31-5 in losses to Winthrop, Gardner-Webb and St. John’s. Junior righthander John Foley will get his first start of the season against the Commodores tomorrow. He went 8-1 with a 3.50 ERA as a sophomore at Springfield College before transferring to Evansville.
Redshirt freshman Caleb Cotham will make his first collegiate start for the Commodores. Cotham picked up a save in the season opening win over Oregon State on Friday. He blanked the Beavers for three innings without a hit, while also striking out three and walking two.
The Commodores are 6-0 in home openers at Hawkins Field. Vanderbilt went 34-4 at home a year ago, including a 31-2 mark during the regular season.
VU holds a 30-16 all-time advantage over Evansville, including a 7-4 win the last time the two teams met in 2004.
After Wednesday’s game, the Commodores will host the Music City Classic this weekend with Kansas, Iowa and Xavier coming to town.
