NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The battle for third place in the Southeastern Conference between 25th-ranked Vanderbilt and Kentucky will be the stage used to bring attention to a battle that many people face against a fierce opponent.
The Commodores play host to the Wildcats on Thursday night at Memorial Gymnasium (7 p.m. CT tip) for Vanderbilt’s annual “Pink Out” game, which has been organized to raise awareness of breast cancer. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the Valentine’s night game, and donations will be collected in support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center.
In conjunction with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Associations’ “Think Pink” initiative and Vanderbilt’s “Baskets for Benefits” program, fans can pledge donations for each free throw that the Commodores make on Thursday. The form is available at Vanderbilt’s official athletic web site, Click Here. For each one dollar pledge submitted, fans are eligible to receive four tickets. Details are available on the online form.
On the hardcourt, Vanderbilt holds a one-game lead over Kentucky for third place in the SEC. The Commodores have won five straight games, including a 92-47 victory over Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Sunday. Kentucky enjoyed a bye this weekend after a 59-54 win over Ole Miss last Thursday.
The Commodores are led by junior Christina Wirth, who is averaging over 14 points per game in conference play. Vanderbilt’s 7-2 record is the Commodores’ best nine-game record since the league expanded to a 14-game schedule in 1999.
Samantha Mahoney and Sarah Elliott pace the Wildcats, under first-year Head Coach Matthew Mitchell. The team went 6-8 in non-conference play, but has righted the ship against league foes to amass a 6-3 record to this point.
