NASHVILLE – #23/20 Vanderbilt plays its fifth game on the road in the SEC when the Commodores travel to Athens, Ga., to face off against the Georgia Bulldogs at Stegeman Coliseum at 6:30 p.m. CST. Joe Fisher and Tim Thompson will have the call on the Vanderbilt/ISP Radio Network, with no television scheduled for the contest.
Vanderbilt will take on Georgia for the first time this season, and will face the Bulldogs again in Nashville on February 23. The Commodores will play in their fifth road game in eight SEC contests Wednesday night, with all four of VU’s losses in the regular season coming on the road in Southeastern Conference play.
The Commodores recently ended a two-game skid on Saturday afternoon when they defeated Auburn, 78-71 in Memorial Gym. Freshman A.J. Ogilvy led all Vanderbilt scorers with 19 points, while Alex Gordon added 17 points, Shan Foster tallied 16 points, and Jermaine Beal chipped in 13 points for Vanderbilt. VU improved to 14-0 at Memorial Gym in the 2007-08 season and including last season, the Commodores have won 27 of its last 28 home games.
In the game against the Tigers, VU led 63-62 with 6:35 remaining, but then reeled off next nine points to take a 72-62 advantage. Sophomore guard Jermaine Beal scored seven consecutive points for the Commodores during the run, while freshman A.J. Ogilvy capped the run with a layup to put the game out of reach.
Vanderbilt held a decided advantage in field goal percentage. The Commodores shot 27-of-56 (48.2 percent) from the field, while Auburn shot 23-of-62 (37.1 percent) from the floor.
Shan Foster’s 16 points vaulted him into second place on the Vanderbilt all-time scoring list with 1,739 points. Foster is 152 points away from tying Matt Freije (2001-04) for the most points scored by a Vanderbilt player in their career. Foster also brought down seven rebounds and had three steals.
Vanderbilt and Georgia will meet for the 125th time overall and 56th time in Athens on Wednesday night. The Commodores lead the all-time series, 78-46, but the Bulldogs claim a 30-25 advantage in games played at Georgia.
VU head coach Kevin Stallings is 8-8 in 16 career meetings against Georgia, and has posted a 2-6 record at Stegeman Coliseum. Stallings last won in Athens on February 18, 2006, when the Commodores beat the Bulldogs, 72-55.
Georgia enters the game Wednesday night with an 11-8 overall record, 2-4 in league play. The Bulldogs lost their first home game of the season Saturday, when Kentucky defeated UGA, 63-58.
Billy Humphrey leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per contest. Sundiata Gaines also averages double digits at 13.0 points per game. Gaines also leads Georgia on the glass with 5.7 rebounds per game.
