ATHENS, Ga. — The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team travels to Stegeman Coliseum Sunday to meet the No. 17/14 Georgia Lady Bulldogs for a 1:30 p.m. CT tip.
Head Coach Melanie Balcomb, in her sixth season at Vanderbilt and 15th overall, looks to become the fifth active Southeastern Conference coach with 300 career victories after the Commodores (15-6, 4-2 SEC) got a mid-week win at Florida on Thursday, 66-56.
Senior Liz Sherwood posted a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Jessica Mooney and junior Christina Wirth were also in double-figures. Wirth and Sherwood continue to lead the Commodores in scoring, both averaging at least 13 points per game.
Georgia (16-5, 3-3 SEC) has lost five of its last eight after opening the season with 13 straight victories. The Lady Bulldogs fell to Kentucky, 44-47, on Thursday.
Vanderbilt won the first meeting between the two schools on January 17 in Nashville, 67-59. The Commodores led by 17 at the break and withstood a second half rally by then-No. 11 Georgia.
A win for the Commodores this weekend would give them a share of third place in the SEC at the halfway point of their 14-game schedule. The top four seeds earn a bye in the conference tournament, being held at Nashville’s Sommet Center this March.
